You should outfit your spacecraft with two distinct powers: one for the "up" and "w" buttons, and one for the "down" and "s" buttons, respectively. You can steer your spacecraft by pressing the "left" and "right" arrow keys on your keyboard, or the "A" and "D" keys, respectively. As soon as you are ready, you will be matched up with other players whose skill levels are about equivalent to your own, and the battle will start as soon as that happens. You have to avoid following any traces left behind by ships while you are also attempting to stay alive and making use of your powers to steal points from your opponents.
